People fall victim to drug addiction for countless reasons. While some have to battle hereditary family history, others struggle with intense personal trauma or in many cases with underlying mental health disorders. The presence of mental health disorders along with addiction problems is called "co-occurring disorders" and requires dual diagnosis treatment. Unlike other drug rehab centers, The Canyon has participated in 11 federally-funded research studies on the best practices for dual diagnosis drug and alcohol treatment. Our therapists and treatment team includes some of the best professionals in the world of addiction treatment and provide clinical care that is second to none.
The Canyon has private facilities for women as well as for men. Whether you choose an extended, long-term inpatient stay or a shorter 30-day treatment program, The Canyon provides effective drug rehabilitation that can help put an end to the suffering. If you or a loved one are considering alcohol or drug rehab for an addiction, please give us a call for a free consultation.
Alcohol Rehab
Many alcohol rehab programs have historically provided alcohol rehab alone without fully addressing other mental health issues. Mental health complications are very common among those who participate in alcohol rehab programs. In fact, more than 44% of alcoholics have mental health complications prior to the onset of alcohol dependence and many others zevelop mood-related complications, such as depression and dysthymia, after the onset of the addiction. We now know the importance of alcohol rehab centers to incorporate mental health treatments in addition to alcohol rehab services. At the Canyon we are a leader in research, education and treatment of co-occurring disorders.
At the Canyon, alcohol rehabilitation is structured according to you or your loved one's readiness to recover and change. The alcohol rehabilitation at the Canyon helps individuals get started on their recovery by providing medication to control cravings or reduce withdrawal symptoms (when needed) and screening for mental health conditions.
Co-occurring Disorders
The terms dual-diagnosis and co-occurring disorders are often used interchangeably with the terms co-morbidity, concurrent disorders, co-morbid disorders, and dual disorder; they describe a condition where a person is affected by both chemical dependency and an emotional or psychiatric illness. Individuals who experience a dual diagnosis often face a wide range of psychosocial issues and may experience more than two interacting illnesses. The treatment program at the Canyon is nationally recognized for integrative and evidence based methods that have produced proven results for individuals with addiction and mental health disorders, we are one of very few facilities that are prepared to deal effectively with a dual diagnosis.
Research shows that more than half of the people affected by one condition (such as an addictive disorder) are also affected by at least one other condition (such as an emotional condition or mental illness), and vice versa. This diagnosis is referred to by a variety of terms including: co-occurring disorder, dual diagnosis, co-morbidity, concurrent disorders, co-morbid disorders, and dual disorder. Individuals with co-occurring disorders often face a wide range of psychosocial issues and may experience more than two interacting illnesses. When all conditions are not simultaneously treated, recovery is far more difficult. Unfortunately, because many addiction treatment and mental health programs treat only one condition, many people are under-treated or inappropriately treated. A single course of treatment is less likely to be effective than a comprehensive plan of treatment that simultaneously treats all conditions, addictions, and disorders.
